STATEMENT FROM MILES COLLEGE PRESIDENT
CONCERNING CHAIRMAN LOCKETT

We are greatly saddened by the passing of the Chairman of the Miles College Board of Trustees, Chairman Wallace Edward Lockett. He was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees in October 2010. Chairman Lockett was a man of faith, serving as Bishop of the Fifth Episcopal District of our great Zion.

Being a developer and committed to community development, Chairman Lockett was deliberate in his engagement and support of growth and development plans for Miles College to include the North Campus expansion and unification. He spoke with great enthusiasm for and commitment to the historic development of the College through this $125 million expansion and unification initiative. The College will utilize his professional insight and knowledge which he shared in moving forward with the plans that he dearly embraced. The expression of his direction, vision, and zeal for Miles College in the 21st Century will be missed by the entire College community, but it will not be forgotten as we forge our way forward in the continual deployment of our unified mission. Chairman Lockett was a thoughtful man and he will be missed by myself and the Miles College Community as a whole.

We are thankful for the leadership of Vice Chairman Lawrence L. Reddick III, who now immediately acts as Chairman of the Miles College Board of Trustees. Under the leadership of Chairman Reddick, Miles more than doubled in land size and grew its operating budget from $38 million to $50 million, increased net assets by nearly $10 million and grew our endowment by $5 million.  As Miles College is currently engaged in the process of cyclical reaffirmation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, Chairman Reddick’s experience and leadership, having served in this capacity during the Colleges last reaffirmation, will prove a key to continued success. My administration and the College community are thankful for Chairman Reddick’s leadership and support of Miles College.

The thoughts and prayers of the entire Miles College community are with Bishop Lockett’s family, Mrs. Lillie B. Lockett, his three children; Dwayne Demetrius, Vernon Dale and Nicole Tonita, and grandchildren.
