Lane College Confers Honorary Doctorate of
Humane Letters to
Mr. Cliff Harris, General Secretary of Lay

During the 2012 Commencement exercise held at the
Oman Arena in Jackson, TN on April 29, 2012, Lane
College Board of Trustees conferred the Honorary
Doctorate Degree of Humane Letters to the Honorable
Clifford L. Harris. Following the tradition of
recognizing individuals who have made or are making
an impact on the Christian Methodist Episcopal
Church and /or the world church community, and other
endeavors, the Honorary Degree is offered with all
rights and privileges there to.

Mr. Harris is a native of Okmulgee, Oklahoma and is
a member of the Ninth Episcopal District of the CME
Church. He has served at every level of lay
activities in the CME Church, including President of
the Connectional Lay Council. In 2010, Mr. Harris
was elected the General Secretary of Lay Ministry.

Dr. Michael Lomax, President of the United Negro
College Fund, gave the Commencement address. UNCF
is the largest private provider of scholarships and
educational support to minority and low income
students. He reminded the audience of several
thousand in attendance that Lane College always has
been a leader among black colleges. “The future of
black colleges however, is in our hands,” he stated.
Over 200 Baccalaureate graduates in arts and
sciences were reminded of the college’s motto: “The
Power of Potential.” He urged the graduates to,
“Follow their dreams. The race is not over, it has
just begun.”

Members of the Classes of 1962, 1952 and 1942 were
honored and received their 50th, 60th and 70th year
diplomas, respectively. Among them were Dr. Elnora
P. Hamb, the 9th president of the Women’s Missionary
Council and Senior Bishop Thomas L. Hoyt, Jr., both
members of the Class of 1962.
