Bishop Ronald
Cunningham selected as a ‘Hunger Hero’ by Bread for the World

WASHINGTON, DC- Bishop Ronald Cunningham was
recognized as one of 30 “Hunger Heroes” by Bread for the World, a national,
Christian, anti-hunger organization, in honor of the group’s 30th
anniversary this month. Bishop Cunningham was chosen by Bread for the World
to represent the many individuals, organizations and denominations that have
worked in partnership with Bread for the World to increase awareness of
hunger in the United States and abroad. The “Hunger Hero awards were
presented at Bread for the World’s 30th anniversary celebration
at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, on June 21st.
A Bread for the World member since 1988,
Bishop Cunningham is the 53rd Bishop of the Christian Methodist
Episcopal Church and the Presiding Bishop of the 10th Episcopal
District. Bishop Cunningham served as the General Secretary of Christian
Education for the CME Church for 16 consecutive years. He has had a rich
pastoral ministry among several congregations that has spanned nearly 40
years. In addition, he has served as professor of religion and philosophy
and chairman of the Social Science Division at Lane College; vice-president
of Texas College. He has been extensively involved with Missions Beyond the
USA, Church World Service and the Witness Unit Committee of the National
Council of Churches of Christ, through which he has been a significant force
on behalf of hungry and poor people throughout the world.
In 2004, Bread for the World celebrates 30
years of seeking justice as Christian voice for ending hunger. A nonpartisan
citizens’ movement of 50,000 people of faith, including 2,500 churches, BFW
members help hungry people by lobbying our nation’s decision makers on
legislation that addresses the root causes of hunger and poverty in our
communities and around the world. BFW members are organized by congressional
district into local networks nationwide. Its members write, call and visit
members of Congress and generate media attention about national
legislation and other efforts that address hunger.
