Articles of Religion
The 25 articles found in our Discipline were selected by John Wesley from the thirty-nine Articles of the Church of England and sent to The Methodist Episcopal Church. The Methodist Episcopal Church at its beginnings adopted these articles as setting forth its faith. No Methodist or group of Methodists, not even the General Conference of the Church, has a right to change any of the Articles even by a word.
It is important to realize that each one of the articles was written in answer to a direct question or a direct challenge to answer infidels or agnostics who wanted to know the Church beliefs about God and Christ. Some of the Articles refuted Roman Catholic teachings about the sacraments or worship of saints.
What we believe about God, the Trinity, the Bible, the Church, Jesus Christ, Justification by Faith, and sanctification are included in the articles.
